Mumps is a very big cause of hearing loss, so it is possible that it could've caused it. But you said that your cousins speech has not been good, and if the hearing loss only started after the mumps that would've not affected her language and speech development, as she is already 5. Maybe the 2 are not linked at all in her case?!

I think K's coughing is attributed to allergies because now he is sneezing and has a runny noise etc. Giving him flusin along with his allergy meds to try and at least clear his nose up. K is once again refusing to eat supper at home, all he wants his either biscuits/yogurt or cereal!!??

DH bought me such a lovely top yesterday and a pair of oakley sunglasses. apparently its for always getting up and attending to K without moaning lol

Angie, if they get tests etc. can I send them to you? She had Mumps in March and they think that's what caused the hearing loss.

We had a better night.Cj is feeling a bit better, he was very tired when I go home, so we played a bit inside and I bathed him at 5:30 and he ate a little bit, and fell asleep just after 6:00, slept through till 5:30.

Ally, that is extremely sad about your cousin! On the plus side her hearing loss is only one sided, and she still has hearing ability in the other ear, which does compensate a bit for the weaker ear! The ear institute is very proffesional and they have all the best equipment, staff etc so it is very good that she is going there. I am not sure what her hearing looks like in the affected ear, but there are different causes to hearing loss especially one sided deafness, as it is not a typical loss. A full case history will be obtained to determine the possible cause. In short, normally unilateral loss could be caused by middle ear infections, trauma to the ear, viral infections, or it could be congintal (since birth). Normally with a unilateral loss, a hearing aid could be fitted if there is still residual hearing in the ear, if the ear is totally dead they do a Bone Anchored hearing aid implant. A cochlear implant is normally done on patients with bilateral losses.
Please let your aunt know that with new research and technology the possibilities are endless!!! As I said your cousin will be in very good hands at the ear institute, and they will take your aunt through the whole process step by step. I wish them all the best and they should know that the process of any amplification is a adjustment for young and old, and they should be patient with her - they will have to take her for auditory rehabilitation and speech therapy.

Glad that everyone is doing well - I haven't been able to respond & comment as much as I like but I read every update that drops into my inbox at work during the day!!

My next appointment is on monday. Excited to see how Riley is progressing!

Work currently still fails to hold my attention for very long, I'm easily distracted the last few weeks....
