Meags thanks SO much for the update on Genesis - I am with Sr Phindi so thanks for that feedback!

Question ladies : I am moving over to Sr Phindi after my 20 week scan with my gynae.

Sr Phindi asked me to bring any documentation etc that I had but it's all with my gynae (except a bit with Maryke) I am going to Dr Mia (thanks Joli for that update too! Clearly we are in good hands! :)) at 28 and 36 weeks or something like that, already booked.

my concern : can I ask my gynae for all my 'stuff' i.e. blood tests, etc so I can hand over?

2nd concern: I already have an authorisation number from my med aid for Genesis. But they say I should only book in at 32 weeks. If Genesis is getting so popular, what if they are full for my due date or around then 2nd March (I'm sure it's possible) then what? I'll have to go to hospital and who will be my doc then? :( They don't seem keen for me to book my place now but I'm concerned there won't be space.

Any ideas?

Cath

HELLO MY FRIENDS!!!!!!

Wow I have missed you all :)
I had about 10 pages to catch up on so very few personals - only the ones I can remember.

Firstly for those birthing at Genesis, I am going to give you a low down on how it works there.

You will come in, in labour. Depending how far you are, you may be sent back home to progress your labour (I guess if you live far then you'd just progress at Genesis) or they'll tell you to go for a LONG walk around zoo lake.

From 5cm dilated you will be allowed to labour in the bath. There are birthing balls you can also labour on. You will only be monitored every now and then on the machine that measures baby's heart beat and contractions so you are able to mobilise as much as you like.

Your midwife will be the only one caring for you at this stage - but doulas are available and some will come and assist you throughout your labour (or only for the birth if you prefer) to help you with pain coping techniques, massage, breathing techniques etc.

Once it is time for the birth, a second midwife (Genesis staff) will be present as an assistant and to manage the baby after the birth. This midwife can also act as your photographer to capture baby being born etc.

As far as pain relief goes....epidural is LAST resort and completely discouraged. You will be offered a TENS machine (pads that release a sort of electric pulsation on your back), you will be offered Entonox (happy gas), Pethidine and Aterax (injections) and then epidural is last resort. While I worked there, no one received an epidural even though they asked.

As for the neonatal ICU - you can generally predict if there is going to be a problem before the baby is born but what they have there is adequate enough for minor distress or problems. Also, they have transferred a couple of babies to Linkwood so who ever was told there havent been any transfers...they lied to you (you didnt hear this from me!)

Hmmm what else...oh yes. Who ever is seeing Phindi - she is LOVELY. So calm, peaceful and friendly and very open minded to what you want.

ok that's Genesis in a nut shell :)

Joli thanks for saying I look like an angel! haha. Most people just tell me I look quite young

My cat had an abcess burst on her back on Tuesday but I was at work. So after getting home at 8pm, eating dinner, getting ready for bed, I saw it and then had to get dressed and take her to the vet as I was working another 12 hours the next day and couldnt leave it until today. so that cost R1500
She has to wear a cone on her head until Sunday but man she hates it and I feel so sad for her :( I took it off briefly this morning to see if she would like the wound area and she could not stop rubbing up against me, licking me and purring. Like she was so grateful it was off. She then however started licking the wound so I had to put it back on her. Poor little thing :(

Otherwise not much to report. Was so nice to meet Joli :) My tummy is almost as big as hers! Think I have been feeling the bubbling again yesterday (felt it a lot) so will see how the next few days go :) still not exactly sure if it is the baby. 1 more week until my scan! I am just DYING to know the gender. DH cant understand why I am so impatient about it!!

Kimika - please add a scan for me on 25 October. Going to Maryke so my mom can see the baby :) Sure she is going to love it!! I'll be 18 weeks then so I guess we'll get nice pictures.

I will probably reply a few more posts as I remember what people have said over the last 3 days!

Morning ladies!

How are you all?

Joli, such lovely report from your scan! Must have been so much fun.

Jess, I really hope your son gets better soon. Not fun when little ones are sick :(

LOL, Kimika, I know just what you mean about the not looking properly. I always say that men dont know how to look with their eyes...

Karin, thats a lovely name! And it is such a mission. What I did was list 10 names of each that we liked, and then each week we would go through them and DH would say, yes, no, maybe. After 3 no's we would remove the name. So now we have got our names.
Cape town is freezing at the moment, and apparently will be for the entire week-end. But seeing I'm off to the hot springs, I'm not worried ;)

AFM, my morning started with me trying to drive Em to school, and hearing a funny noise, so pulled intot he shops and have a totally flat tire. So my dad had to come fetch Em to take her, and I had to walk home in the rain :(
My poor car is sitting at the shops till my dad is finished with his meetings and can come and sort it out for me.

Hi girls!
Sjoe... what a hot day today in George! At 7h50 this morning it was already 25 degrees out there... not complaining though! our winter lasts longer than in Gauteng, so Im happy about being without a jacket all day long. But tomorrow a huge cold front is moving in again and the Cape is going to be freezing again probably. :S

Thanks for all the baby names!! Sheez... what a big mission to find the "right" name for your baby again... its actually such a big responsibility cause your child will have that ALL of his/her life and hopefully carry it proudly and not be ashamed of it.... so wow, hope my child will like her name one day!

Anyways, after a LOOONG search and lots of research I found the name that I absolutely LOVE!! So.. now its just up to hubby to decide if he loves it too... Im giving him time to make up his mind about it first.
So what do you ladies think of .... Kiana???? Pronouncing it "Ki-hana" It means "living with Grace". Another meaning I found was "divine".... so if you combine the two its "divine grace".... so beautiful.

Jessica - agree with Kimika - watch kiddie movies at home or baking biscuits or something. Rather don't take him out.

Kikima - after needles, I've got a big fear of gynaes he he, but Dr. Mia really was sweet. I've never been to a Dr. that checked everything in so much detail. He even listened to my heart, lungs etc. Even explained the brain fluid on Baby B, i.e. see this goes up and this goes down and this goes to the side, but I didn't understand too much  . Yip, will book a scan at Maryka at around 22 / 23 weeks and then again at around 30 weeks (3D) and then will see Dr. Mia at 36 weeks and the midwives in between. He he Kimika you are soooo curious  . Well when Dr. Mia told hubby he would give him a clue he went to the area and I think I saw the parts, then he moved a bit away and scanned over something else (I think he paused on the jewels and not the willy itself, that's why hubby couldn't see) and I looked to see for 3 lines for a girl, but there was definitely something else sticking out there and never saw 3 lines, but now I don't know if maybe I saw the cord or something. Not very sure, but the Dr. had a big grin on his face!

LOL men! Just give him your opinion anyways! Then afterwards you can tell him - see I told you so!

Aww thats such nice words!!! Well said :)

Jessica, hope your little boy gets better soon!! mmm things to do? watch movies together :) go shopping, bake biscuits, go to a petting zoo.. ooops soorry I forgot he is sick :( Ok watch movies then !

Joli, soo fantastic that your scan went well! Also happy you like dr Mia. I really dont like male gynaes.. and was wondering what Ill do if I have to go to him too! So are you going to book 2 scans with maryke before you see him again?? And I wanted to ask how he saw the closed cervix but didnt want to do it on FB :) So how sure are you that you saw boy bits?? Or dont you want to talk about it? ;)

Oh no hubby just sometimes asks a question and then he says "so what do you think" and when I give him my opinion he just goes rambling on what he thinks! aiii.. pls dont make me waste my breath on an opinion if it wasnt going to matter later on! He just did it twice last night about simple stuff and then I started brewing some hormones and then he did that thing that men do.. look for something and *cant find it* but then its right there on the spot it always is!! And that he did 3 times last night and once this morning!! So Im just brewing hormones on normal day to day issues.. nothing major ;) hehe
