Pockets are a favorite all round because they are cheap and they dry very fast and you can stuff them as you need.
yes, the insert goes inside the pocket.
the type of material do not stain easily and is also a stay-dry layer, so you can really use them just like that. but you can also use fleece or flannel liners if you want to.
you can make your own liners by cutting up an receiving blanket

the thing with microfibre (MF) is that it doesnt hold much liquid. it absorbes fast, but doesnt hold much. bamboo absorbes slower, but can hold liquid. so for a newborn and small baby microfibre will work great, it will also work for a light wetter.
my 1st lb only lasted to 4 months with microfibre - he is a heavy wetter. my 2nd boy is 21 months and can probably still go 3 hours with only a microfibre insert.
so for your 1 year old, you can definately use a combination with 1 MF and 1 bamboo insert. you can try with only 1 MF insert and see how it goes. lots of moms use 1 MF and just fold a washcloth or dishcloth to add to the nappy. so if cash is tight buy some nappies now and then later get some extra inserts and use washcloths with the MF.
or you can even use a receiving blanket without the MF insert.

biddykins are great nappies to start out with. so you can get a combo pack of 10 nappies for a great price

for the newborn these nappies will not fit from day 1. depending on those tiny newborn legs they will start to fit between 4-8 weeks.
for newborn i would suggest to get 3 of 4 newborn covers and then some flats of prefolds. and you can also make some yourself by cutting up receiving blankets. if you put 3 inserts next to each other you have the size of a good flat and that can just be floded and put in the cover or you do the jellie roll flat. i can take some pics if you want to see what i mean.

i had some muslin burp cloths that i also used as flats on my newborn, they worked great.

My LO is almost a year old and looking to start with cloth nappies how do I go about it? (We are ttc our second and looking to use cloth nappies for the newborn then as well). I see that pocket nappies are the most popular and looked at Biddykins? So when buying the pocket is the insert the portion that gets stuffed into the pocket? I have read that the microfibre insert is not the best to use, but can I use those and just add say a hemp or bamboo insert with on top of it or will it be too bulky?

So I will buy the pocket and a extra inert to be stuffed into the pocket then what can I put between baby's bum and the pocket nappy? I don't want the pocket nappy itself to get stained?

trying to understand in what area you are looking for help...?

1. nappies for newbors - the very best option is flats (the old fasioned way) or prefold with covers. then you can get about 30 flats/prefolds and 3 or 4 newborn covers and you will be sorted for the first 2-4 months (depending on baby's size.
most OSFM (one size fits most) nappies will not fit a newborn and will onl start to fit at about 5-7 kg's. there re alot of options for newborn nappies, but most people say that flats/prefolds is the best for newborns.
these newbors flats can then later be used as extra inserts in the bigger nappies, or if you jus use normal flats or receiving blankets you can use them for very long. i do not really like flats on my toddlers, but i did do flats with my newborn and that was indeed the easiest then.
2. disposable liners works nicely and you can get them at most online retailers. but you can alos get then at ackermans/pep/baby city/baby boom. but please just do not flush them dowm the toilet as the do block te pipes - even the ones that say flushable liners block pipes. so just dunk the poo in the toile and through the liner in the bin. theses liners actuall also wash very well, so i reaule them anyway. i use disposable liners aa well as the fleece liners. i do like the fleece liners more though.
3. if you do not want the nappies with the snaps, then you need to look at fitteds of flats. fitteds will be OSFM (you also get newborn 3-6kg and petite 4-8kg fitteds) there are so many nice brands avaibable. so maybe go to the facebook bage and go through the photo albums to see what brands you like.
most AI1 (all-in-one) and SIO (snap in one) nappies also have the rise snaps
i also like the nappies with the rise snaps as you get a less bulky fit because you can make the nappie smaller if it is needed

Hi ladies

We are TTC our second and looking to go the cloth nappy route. My friend is using the cloth nappies (the one that fits all sizes as has those press studs to increase size as baby grows) and she makes her own fleece/toweling lining but I don't want to go that route. I have read through the posts but it is so confusing with all the name brands and inserts etc. I am looking for a nappy that I can wash but that has a shop bought disposable liner/inner. I would start the nappies from newborn.

Please help
