We are bad that way. Not really good on family meals. My hubby and I stand eating.

Will have to make an effort then!

2KidMamma, how else can I grind the seeds? I don't have a coffee grinder?

Let me type quickly while B eats her apple as she is super unhappy at the moment, very tired today!

Right age? I really have no idea! You know me, I couldn't care less about the right age. I think it depends more on coordination than anything else. Of course they shouldn't run around with a fork :P If it irks other people just don't do it in front of them!

Mmmm, on the cereal. B doesn't really want cereal in the mornings, she now gets a piece of bread. Sometimes I manage to get half a weetbix in her and yes I do feed it to her because I don't enjoy mess before at least 11am ;)

Oh yes, the book says that children (if always offered cutlery at meal times, so they had time to learn) starts using it with a bit more success around their 1st birthday.

You start by just giving her the same things as you use to eat (spoon, fork, knife - baby cutlery) and let her copy you, this is possibly where family meals play a big role.

Reece seems to really prefer using a fork or spoon with BLW, he actually seems to get quite a bit in so I leave him to it. I havn't had to help him since i started BLW except with Scrambled egg once. He didn't want to pick it up. I think he isn't used to the funny feeling of food in his hands and so he struggled to get it onto the spoon but I could see he really wanted to eat it so I cheated and helped him a little. He seems to have really taken a liking to Scrambled eggs and Bovril toast soldiers.

Claudia

Avocado is also a great source of the right Omega's and also Linseed oil so maybe if you can buy linseeds and have then either in a powder form or perhaps put some seeds in a coffee grinder and make it powdery yourself and then sprinkle some over Jame's food.

Well, she actually shoves the gummy bears in her mouth and then demands more. We even have two types. One for vitamins only and then one for iron...

Ja, I hear what you're saying. I am also contemplating going vegetarian after I felt so naar last night after eating Springbok mince. Just couldn't get the picture of the Springbok out of my mind.

Anyway, back to eating. What I actually want to know: are they old enough to start feeding themselves with spoons/forks? (Would love some "proof" or quotation-for the mother in law's purpose. Have to be able to stand my ground.)

Nienke also prefers a fork for some or other dangerous reason. Then runs around with it but I substitute it with a spoon.
She only drinks one bottle milk before she goes to sleep and one when she wakes up. I don't give her more but she does have a lot of juice during the day. (Probably one or two cups.) I must give her more water.

Ok, so I think I am going to go the BLW way from now on, since I want her to start eating with a spoon and fork.

So how do I start? Can Agnes still feed her her porridge? Does B eat her own porridge? (Poor Agnes will have to clean the mess. He-he-he!) Looking forward to going shopping at Fruit and Veg after work!

Deja, B eats gummy bears, just not the vitamin type :) She bites the heads off first!

Have no idea about the milk. I think to get away from all of that you would possibly have to go live off the land on your own farm and keep your own animals which goes against my grain as I can't for the life of me eat something that had a name!

About the spoon/fork thing. Last night we had potato, gem squash and chicken for dinner, I gave B a spoon for the squash as it is difficult to pick up with fingers - I ended up eating with her spoon and she had my fork - needless to say, I ate very slowly! Again I have to ask, does she drink more milk when she eats too little according to you? I mean if she feeds herself and walks away hungry she's going to want something to fill her, not so?. As I said to Juno, it's easier to eat more when it's fed with a spoon and someone else scooping it up and emptying every side of the bowl, when they feed themselves they take longer to chew and get the food on the fork/spoon/fingers so their bodies register that they are eating/getting filled up sooner than they would know it if the spoons come one after the other.

*sorry if anyone reads this and think I'm sounding mean, but Deja knows me, so I think she'll know the tone ;)*

Claudia, you can always try and grate sunflower, pumkin and linseeds over his porridge? This is a great way to get in your omega oils. Also use Olive Oil? I only use olive oil for everything.

We eat a lot of salt, fat, wrong stuff but I try and make Nienke's without all of that. I also use a LOT of spices. Way too many. I just don't like bland food. I make her food separately but lately she's been eating our food as well. (I just add all the "bad stuff" after I have scooped out hers.)

Marijke, then you will have a heart attack. I give Nienke those sweety gummy bears vitamin supplements.   She loves it! :woohoo:

Quick question: I saw the milk question came up. What I want to know: is there a specific brand of milk that's got less "bad hormone stuff they feed to cows"? My grandma pointed this out to me and now I am worried about that. If I could bring up my child on organic food, I would. But it's not readily available here. However, I want to make the best choices with regards to harmful hormones pumped into animals.

Marijke, Nienke now refuses to eat if I feed her. She wants to do it all by herself. You have heard this question a million times and I honestly can't believe I am typing this BUT... she doesn't really take in a lot if she feeds herself. I know Agnes comes on a Monday and then she eats, so I don't really worry about it over weekends. However, I want her to start eating with a spoon. I saw B eating with a fork. Is a fork better?
