Thanks Claudia - v useful info. I didn't realise that so much was absorbed by gumming meat.

My LB is in such a routine now I'm not going to be able to change that - milk and food very separate from each other. He must be getting I would say about 30% - 35% from food. The distinction you make between exploratory as opposed to satisfying is an excellent one and in a way is the principle I working on - puree to satisfy, food fingers to explore with.

I also feel a bit bad in a way that I am using the BLW thread as I am definitely not a purist so I hope you guys don't mind. I thought about starting a more finger food threat but feel it's a bit of a waste as the BLW thread seems to cover the spectrum which actually makes it incredibly useful.

@ Juno up until one food is for fun:) for the first year milk feeds re the most important foods for babies. Infact apparently for 6 months milk si sufficient to meet 100% of a babies nutritional needs, months 6-8 accounts for about 95%, 9-10 a bit less and at a years still counts for 65% of a babies food requirements. Breastmilk (or formula) is easily digested and contains most of the good stuff that your baba needs. Milk is low in iron etc... but its easily digested, so usually your baby absorbs quite a lot more than people expect. Its only from about 9 months that iron reserves become depleted and important in diet.

What this means is that for BLW purists babies do get enough iron etc from gumming meat, and by the time they are 9 months they are normally sufficiently developmentally capable of eating meats etc.

Always give a milk feed before doing BLW so that the food becomes exporatory, rather than satifying (which will agravate irritability), but if you are really worried about proteins and iron then go for your beans and legumes or spinach etc:) There are plety of vegetarians out there that never give their babies meat:)

The problem I am experiencing in introducing my LB to BLW is that because he took so long (over 7 months) to sit up properly and develop the pincer grip, I have relied mostly on pureed food.

As a result he is now accustomed to getting a significant number of calories from puree. When I try and do BLW meals he firstly takes so long to finish his food which tends to makes him tired leading to irritability and frustration and secondly, does not take in as much as he would then if he was fed puree thereby not fully satisfying his hunger.

Just to mention though that he loves the whole experience of handling his own food etc. and I am letting him guide me as much as possible. It's just that he ends up getting so tired.

What I am now having to do is feed a portion of his meal in puree and then the remaining BLW. I'm hoping that the latter will naturally start increasing.

Any suggestions? Tx.
