Goodmorning everyone, I'm still around, but it's hard to sit at the computer with a toddler hanging onto my arm. When I wore jackets and things it was fine but now that it's a bit hotter and I'm wearning short sleeves she pinches my arms when I'm trying to type so I try to stay away from the computer (for my own safety!)
Cherrie, that is the cutest pic! Did he actually choke on the chicken or did he just gag it out? Okay but to answer you question, they learn as they go along, that is why for the first year food is just for fun and learning and milk stays important. I wouldn't starve him (as people have told you) because then you would have to cut down on milk feeds which wouldn't benefit him in the long run. Do remember that he still doesn't know that food makes him full and if he is hungry he just wants milk. As for food not reaching his tummy as your mother implies, I don't think that is the truth because up until about 9 months of age you can do only milk feeds and they will be fine. The thing with starting at 6 months is only so they are prepared and have the skills to eat that they would need when they reach 9 months and food becomes a little more important (but milks still stays more important till 1 year) I'd just let him play and not take too much notice of how much goes in.
The thing BLW teaches you quickly is to leave it up to them and just relax and enjoy meal times with no battle of wills, this helps a lot as they grow older and want that independence, then when you see other parents struggling with 'fussy eaters' you will have the sweetest eater on the block!
Memo, B still swallows chunks especially if she is a little hungry the first couple of bites goes down with eyes that get as big as saucers when she swallows everything whole but as she relaxes and gets into it she starts chewing better. I think it's fine if you want to hold it, blw is just against you actually putting food in your babies mouth which you aren't doing but remember practice makes perfect with regards to how much force to excert on soft/medium foods.
I know its a bit worrying when food passes straight through them and you can see last nights carrots just as they were looking last night in the next days diaper, but again it's all part of the learning experience and B now at 14 months can swallow things whole and it does get processed. But here's the thing mommy, do what you feel works for you!
Claudia, where's your pics?! And get use to the poo, it's going to get worse before it gets better!
