Zodwa, sorry for not replying earlier. Got caught up with the weekend and all that. Your little Ruru is so cute! B couldn't sit up like that till 7 months but yes the most important part of BLW is that he should feed himself.

If I remember correctly I also started earlier than 5.5 months because I needed to know when she was ready. I gave her one thing (I think toast) every day at round about the same time to see and every day her grip and ability got a little better. Until at 5months 3 weeks or something I started including her in meals and lunch because she wasn't interested in breakfast yet.

Jems, that nestrum sounds YUK!

Marijke - I was paging through Your Baby last night and saw Carrot and Spinach Nestum cereal - WTH?? Sounds disgusting!

Troy still not doing so well with bring food to his mouth. Gave him some cheese & pasta last night and battled a it. Opened his mouth wanting me to put it in? I think he is a bit lazy. He enjoys it when we feed him. He will be 6 months tomorrow so will just continue.

Ok Iv answered my own question
I have to let him take the food himself, not give it to him
I'll wait till he's 6 months then.....

Wow - thanks for all the info M. I think it's time I invested in that book - see they have it on Kalahari.net. It's still invaluable however seeing how you put it into practice. Those pics of B are just classic :)she looks like such a contented baby.

Ruru is 4,5 months now. He has lost his protrusion reflex, sits by himslef, not upright though but when I put him on my lap then he is upright, can control his head & support it & always makes chewing motions.
Today DH was eating watermelon & Ruru was lunging for his plate. So I put a piece of it in his hand & it went straight to his mouth. He was sucking & chewing it & he chewed a piece off but spat it out.
He was holding the piece with both hands though ;)
My question is, is he not too young for BLW. He fed imself watermelon, yes, but is he not too young?????
I we decide to let him feed himslef at this stage shld I avoid certain foods or is he just developmentally ready?
