Congrats Sweett86! I'm very happy for you :)

AdeleF - sorry to hear that you were in hospital. What were the results of the latest test? At least Joshua is at a great weight and doing well. Do let us know what is happening.

Lebo - glad to hear the shower went well. I haven't had water leaking but I've heard that sometimes you can leak and the amniotic sac actually repairs itself. Sounds to me like your symptoms are signs of labour...though I don't go on experience, only on what I've read.

AFM, I thought I was officially 39 weeks today but my midwife seems a bit confused and is calculating me 3 days ahead which means baby boy's due date would be this weekend. Either way, I'm feeling good :) I went to the chiropractor today and I have a prenatal massage booked for tomorrow that I'm really looking forward to. Hospital bag is packed and I've baked a whole lot of cookies to take for the nurses at the hospital (my hypnobabies book recommends you take some home baked treats for the nurses and it seems to be a popular thing to do here in the States - I figure it can't hurt to have the nurses look favourably on me!). My mom's packed and frozen a couple of meals and she'll cook and help out after the baby is born. We're slowly packing some boxes but can't really do much since we're still here for another month and we need most of the basic stuff till then.

Overall I'm feeling pretty relaxed :) Just chilling, listening to my hypnobabies tracks, and looking forward to birthing this baby! I think I'm going to miss being pregnant (although not the yucky first trimester morning sickness).

Hi ladies

How is everyone doing?

My baby shower/ house warming went fabulous on saturday but I think I over did it a bit on sunday my body was too sore I stayed in bed the whole day. My hospital bag is 70% packed n doc plans to take baby out on 21st

I'm now 36 weeks n 3 days just a quick question on saturday evening I had a bit of water leaking not too much n it only happened once. I v also noticed that I'm getting more loose stools and nausea with some low abdomen pains. I'm seeing doc tomorrow but was just wondering if anyone is experiencing the similar symptoms?

Hi Everyone,

Firstly, congratulations to Sicha, 2km & Sweett86 with the birth of their beautiful babies.

Glad to hear everyone is still doing well.

Just a quick update on what is happening this side.

I spent a couple of nights in hospital - hypertension and did a 24hour urine test. As the protein in the urine was not too high yet (240), I got to go home and I have been booked off ever since (2wks now)

Because my blood pressure is still marginally high (with medication), I am currently doing another 24hour urine test. If the protein has climbed, Joshua will be born next week via c-section, otherwise the following week.

I am a bit sad that the vbac didn't work out, but it really is safer for me and baby at this stage.

At least baby is still doing fine. Estimated weight is between 3.5-3.8kg!!!

I will chat again soon. Little days left!!

I know I haven't been on all year but thought I would come on and say I had my LG (dr told us at 21weeks it was a girl...not a boy) on 24 May. 3,59kg 49cm. I had a Caesar at 38 weeks because she was breech and I had calcification on my placenta.

She is just too precious for words and I didn't think I could love anything this much!

Good luck to everybody! Enjoy the rest of your pregnancys' and get plenty of sleep while you can.

Xx

I think the whole labour thing is actually confusing for everyone, often women go in to the hospital thinking they are in labour and get sent home. And you can go in to labour and then stall (the human body is amazing, I've read that women can actually unconsciously stall their own labour when they feel unsafe/insecure and that's why people sometimes get to the hospital and labour seems to have stopped). What makes it so difficult is that it seems to be so different from person to person so it's impossible to predict. Waters breaking and regular contractions seem to be the common indicators though.

I moved from my doctors to a midwife practice because I want to have a birth with as few medical interventions as possible - and midwives tend to be more suited to natural births. I think the primary difference is that doctors are trained to treat pregnancy and birth as a medical event (like all other conditions which they treat) whereas midwives see it as a natural and normal part of a woman's life instead of an illness. So midwives tend to see women with uncomplicated pregnancies. They're different from doctors in that they generally spend more time talking about the process of birth and pregnancy during your appointments and instead of just coming in to deliver the baby they tend to stick around during the labour to support you (the word "midwife" actually means "with-woman" - the point is that they are with the woman when she labours and gives birth).

And the midwives are different from normal nurses in that they are specifically trained to look after pregnant women and to deliver babies. Some of the more experienced midwives are amazing, I love that they can tell the position of the baby without an ultrasound and, like my midwife said to me today, if you're in labour they can usually tell how you're progressing just by looking at your demeanor and talking to you instead of having to do cervical checks (if your birth is unmedicated). So there will be nurses and midwives when I give birth, and when I go for my appointments, the nurse takes my blood pressure and weight and then I see the midwife for the actual appointment.

Wow, 400kms is far for your husband to travel every weekend! I'm sure you must miss him during the week.

Firefly - thankx for the whole dialation info if I am having that excrutiating pain again I will refuse an internal checkup and have already notified the hospital on that nurses behaviour. NOT letting her come anywhere near me again!

so if its not how dialated u are and ppl can have contraction 5 min apart and still not be idialated enough to deliver then what determines if ur in labor? ur water breaking? all this signs stuff is so confusing :/

I also had bleeding like u in my first trimester from 7 weeks to 13 weeks it was really scary but my dr just told me to do bedrest and didnt check me, glad about that cuz when this woman checked me I had bleeding for a day and now its gone.

I have also got my mom around now, just I came to stay by my mom since the private hospital here was working out half the price compared to where I stay and since I have a 12 month exclusion on my pregnancy from medical aid I have to cover it all in cash! ::( but anyways its always wonderful to have your mom around I am enjoying the laid back time and all the rest I am getting :) only downfall is that I have to say goodbye to hubby every weekend cuz he works 400km from where my mom lives.

can I ask why u moved over to the midwives from ur doctor and wht is the difference between a normal nurse and midwife?

I'm so glad my dr is back in town now and I have an appointment tommorrow morning. I have had v little white blood cells in my urine but dr was not concerned cuz it was so little... has this happened to anyone else?

Congrats Sicha and 2kmm (Michele - thank you for the update)!

Sicha, Tafara looks absolutely adorable. I hope the pain gets better.

2kmm, yay on the pink! Hope the c-section went well :)

Lebo, I'm surprised that Genesis was reluctant, I always thought they were very pro-vbacs but I can understand you not wanting to switch at this late stage.

Nosh, I would definitely request not to be assigned that midwife or nurse again. I'm in the US and my midwives do not do cervical checks routinely from 36 weeks (unless there is bleeding or some other medical reason). It does seem to be common here though but from what I've researched I would prefer not to have them done - because 1) internal cervical checks can carry a risk of infection and 2) dilation means absolutely nothing. Some people can be dilated for weeks and not go into labour and others can be not dilated at all and then progress very quickly into labour. In fact, my midwives keep cervical checks to a complete minimum even when you're actually in labour.

My doctor (before I moved over to my midwives) said that if the first ultrasound projected due date is close to the calculated date from your LMP, they use the LMP. My first ultrasound projected 12 June but since my LMP was 13 June we've been keeping it at 13 June.
