Newborn and baby advice

Girly, your lo just had a big op, the pain meds in hospital would have been very strong and you are giving her ponstan and panado. The cumulative affect of all this (including the trauma of surgery and ICU) will have knocked her a bit. That said if even bumping on her feet tickling her and shocking her awake is not helping her feed (try with a cup/bottle because its easier to "suck" is not working GO SEE YOUR DOC because you do not want her to become ketonic.

Girly for the first few days Graeme would not wake up from the pain pills I was on. We ended up stripping him down to his nappy so he was uncomfortable in the cooler air and then I would tickle his feet. If he fell asleep during a feed again tickling his feet or tickling his cheek seemed to help. Try taking her outside, its nice and fresh, not too cool (you're in CT right?). Hope that helps.

Hi ladies

Hope Im not butting in here, you girls seem like a closely knit group.

Hopefully you can give some advice.
My baby is 3 weeks old today, spent a week of that in hospital so a bit behind in weight gain etc.

I'm major stressed about her feeding.
The first couple days home was tough, she was very lathargic etc (ponstel & ponado) and wasnt waking 3hourly for feeds. She came home weighing 2.9kgs only (2 weeks) and I know that under 3kgs its very important they feed 3 hourly.
Then it got better, Mon - Wed she was feeding like a champ 2-3 hourly during the day, and 4hourly twice at night.

But since this morning's feed at 10am, (last was 6am) it's now been 5 hours, and I've been trying to get her to wake up and feed since 3,5hrs after her last feed. She's taken in a little bit, but between falling asleep and had to take her off boob, get her crying awake, latch her again, only for her to fall asleep on the boob less than 5 minutes later, and when sucking not doing so very vigorously.

If I dont wake her she wont eat in her sleep. last night I gave her some ponstel but at like 2am so by now it should be out of her system. I am stressing big time.
I'm going to express now and use a syringe to make sure she has food in.

Our circumstances are unique, as most newborns dont sit with ponstel in their systems, but I really need some reassurance.
If they dont feed properly Ive heard their blood sugar levels drop and they get even more lathargic and I could sit with even bigger problems.
She usually wakes when she's hungry, but doesnt generally latch until she's pretty misreable and crying. But once she's latched she'll drink solidly for 5-10minutes and then on and off for 5minutes. The breastfeeding consultant says that this is sufficient for her needs. But today this is not the case. We last fed properly at 10AM and its now 3pm!!!

Ok long story short. Any of you experience where your newborn (3weeks) doesnt wake for feeds and you land up with bigger feeding gaps. Did they return back to normal?

How do you wake your newborn for feeds?
I have tried kango care, and stroking her tummy downwards till she wakes, and massaging the legs which she doesnt like and causes her to wake up. She cries and cries, and then latches, and like I say, a couple minutes later falls asleep on the breast.

I'm desperate now so appreciate your help.

I will feed for a minimum of a year, but hope to go closer to 2. The longer I can keep it up, the better immune support James will have:)

I've just stopped, mathilde is 20 months, she's only been drinking at night for the past 4 months!! Such a pleasure, sad to stop. She still tries her luck and asks every now and then. Her sister says, no no more milk!!

Scribbling it was the first time he has puked like that. I had given him both at the time and it all came up. I just think he did not know his own limit?

Thank you, his gums aren't red or swollen or anything. So not teething, just chewing on us. I think he is going through a growth spurt, feeding every two minutes (Not quite but feels like it.) I have been topping up with formula every now and then but I think I will get jungle juice to get my supply up as he wants more after I nurse him.

Breastfeeding moms how long are you looking at bfeeding for?
