file Eight Medicines you should not give your children

Marilu I really think we try to medicate quickly to prevent them from becoming really sick which is what mom's should do If we just leave our kids we feel as if we are harming them but the meds often cause more problems.

Majority of childhood illnesses are viruses and they do not require antibiotics.

What my paed and I do is wait and see. For eg if Dylan (rare) gets a mild fever then we wait as that normally means virus. I treat him at home with calpol and saline and if he is very chesty I may take him for physio. After 3 days which is usually the duration of a virus if he is still sick I take him in. A bacterial infection that does require antibiotics is usually acompanied by a very high fever of 39 which lingers. Fevers are a sign that the body is fighting infection so it is a good thing and nothing to actually be scared of unless it does not respond to fever meds.

A child under 6 months of age with a fever should always be seen by a doctor.

she got a infusion 1 every 3 weeks for 6 months, she would go into hosp early morn, be sedated cause they get kept on heart, lung and blood pressure machines. so she must sleep and be still, she cried when we went in but only for the sticky heart stickers she hates, called them monster things, she never knew about the drip or anything. the vallagan tastes aweful, so most times she vomited it up all over me, in this time i was heavy preggies with bardon. she would receive the infusion be healthy for 2 weeks and the last week before the infusion she is in hospital again, very sick, so it carried on till the last one which was 3 dec 2009, and i really didnt think this would work cause she has been sick between each infusion so far, but after that she never got sick again, till now, but i really think that measles injection caused the drop!!! now im just trying to boost it with vitamins and reuteri and purback every day, cause i really dont wanna go through that again.
she has also picked up weight so nicely, she is now 15kg. 5 kg in 4 months is fabulous, she is eventually catching up!!!
dont want 2 steps back now!!!!!

joli: just after her 1st birthday she got hih fevers and her first cold came along, so it was hospital with tonsilitis, then it carried on like that till her tonsils were smelling vrot and ewwww, and got taken out sept 2008, 1.5 yrs old, then she continued getting sick, every 2 weeks, she was always sick, middel ear infection, grommets got put in november 2008, still continued getting sick, she got rsv and influenza A & bacterial and viral infections at same time that we wold end up in hosp for a week to 2 weeks, and as we would come out and that drip out her arm, it was a week then she was back in again.
so dr decided to test her immunity levels, this was done sometime early last year 2009, came back very very low, selective immune defiency, she had to get polygam infusions. we did the homeopathic route but her immunity was so low she was hospitilized during that time and we couldnt wait, she was weighing like 10 kg at 2 yrs old... so we started polygam. she has white blood cells but doesnt have the immuglobulins to tell the white bloods cells to fight, so they give them via infusions in her blood, its dangerous, we have had convulsions once and a heart rate of 198 beats p/m.. she couldve died... but she needed it.

cont....

I really think a link like this is necessary. I' never knew that Aspirin shouldn't be given to babies, and I'm so glad to now know that Demazin isn't supposed to be use whenever Mignione has a slight runny nose. The reason why I started the Demazin at the first sign of a snotty nose, is to stop it from getting green and then needing antibiotics. NOW I've learned..first try the 'no meds' routine like saline solution loads of times a day..and THEN when and if it goes worse, then I'll first phone the doc and ask what he suggests.

Another thing, M is quite a plump baby, so the doc always said thats a good thing cause then I can give the dose on the box, he also said small babies should get a smaller dose of meds. That I also didn't know until I started reading up about this kind of stuff.

So I really think this info about meds is necessary for us moms, especially new moms!

we did the homeopatthis route first from the beginning, but her immuntiy was soooo low, 0.5% levels, so it just wasnt working... she was really in hospital every 2 weeks... the only chronic meds she is on is purbac, which is a immunity booster when given in small amounts apparently, but dr said the other day if its not working its no use giving it to her, we can give something stronger like klacid, whcih is a antibiotic, but she only gets 2.5ml everydy so it boosts the immunity, but it makes her vomit, its got little bitter granules in. this was also a year ago we tried that last dont know what she would do with it now...
i wish for a miracle cure!
oh ya she is on the singulair i forgot, but thats just to keep her chest from closing...

i also agree, that is so wrong!!! she has to wake the child up in the morning, its a sedative, nuts i tell you, completely nuts, i would never be-able to sedate my child in my own home like that!!!!!

Brownie I saw that you dont always finish antibiotics. Well, I had a discussion recently with my pead about antibiotics and whether its true that one can form a resistance to it. The conversation came about because my LO has had a number of colds and infections since moving to Cape Town and went on antibiotics a few times. Anyway he said that with the new type of antibiotics you won't develop a resistance, unless it is not used the way in which it is prescribed, e.g not finishing it.
