Brownie please don't give your lo antibiotics that are left over. Antibiotics should never be given unless the child has been seen by a doctor. The reason being that frequent use of antibiotics reduces the effect of them long term and creates an overgrowth of bacteria in the colon which causes alot of problems.

Google is great, but one should always seek medical treatment when your lo is sick especially if your lo is under 6 months.

My kid for eg does not get fevers with infection and is generally a happy child when he is sick so I never know when he is really sick so I just get him checked out if he eats less or is more lethargic. A gp misdiagnosed dylan when he had bronchiolitis and the paed was annoyed. No he only sees his paed.

What we pay for is peace of mind so if I leave with allergex then I am happy that he doesn't have to have an antibiotic.

Charlene you must be so exhausted of all the meds and having a sick kiddie. Have you tried homeopathy as a side line. I was on 7 chronic meds and now I dont take anything. I know I was against homeopathy but I think it can actually supplement regular medicine so not to replace but to help.

As for the insert, that is shocking. Child abuse.

Oh shame Charlene. It's terrible to struggle like that :-(.

Yip, I know some people use meds to get their kids to sleep :-(. Really sad.

brownie: you are soooo lucky. sjoe if i must let nature run its course with ange which i have tried time and time again, thinking she will fight this herself we land up in hopsital but then again she has a immune defiency so she cannot fight it. she got infusions of immuglobulins for 6 months and last one was 3 december 2009 and she has now only gotten sick again, so her body did really well, and ever since she got that measles injection at school, whoops down went the immunity!! sad actually... now im just not getting her better again, wish i knew how though.
she had 7 days betaniod/allergix, was better, then 2 weeks later got sick again, again betaniod/allergix for 5 days, nothing, course of antibiotics and singulair and desellex and she is still coughing up a storm, everything nice and loose, but now the meds finished, lets see what happens!!!

do you ladies wanna know what is scary?

You know, maybe I'm too laid back or a bad mommy or something but it seems I'm the only one that doesn't believe in regular trips to the doc/pead  LO has only been to the pead 2x in his life and once to the doc (he's 2,4 yrs now). The first time he was about 6months and had just had his first bout of runny tummy, the 2nd time it was for his eczema and the last time for an earache. I self medicate most of the time, esp when it comes to colds and coughs. The last doc I went to gave me a list of meds that I can use for such things and that was that. I trust our chemist and so she hasn't let me down. But I also learned a lot from other mommies on PF and have been able to find my way around meds. We've had plenty of coughs, battled eczema and ended figuring out myself what caused it without help from pead, had a few runny tumms and thanks to mommies learned what to do/not do and thanks to google, yes google, found out the danger signs that require a doc's help and 'normal sick signs'.

My first point of call would be doc then pead. The last time I went to a pead was when we almost paid R400 consult for a prescription of R10 allergex! Even though my med aid option doesn't require we use Prime Cure clinics I figured they are best for normal ailments that don't require specialists. They charge R225 inclusive of consult and meds AND note to employer for sick leave which mind you my gynae wouldn't give even when you are about to deliver :( Too many doctors do guess work and at the end of the day you are still stuck with a sick baby and no money anymore. But my child is in fairly good health thank God, I know other mommies don't have the option of letting an ailment run its course as it may be too detrimental for their kids. But only you know what's best for your kids.

Argh I hate meds, period! I don't even give vitamins to LO. Any vitamin he needs he'll get from his food. If I must give meds then its only for a day or two, I don't remember giving him meds for more than a week unless its antibiotics and even with those I have some that are lying around unfinished, don't tell the doc that  I believe in following my instincts when it comes to my baby and when they say enough with the meds then enough. And so far so good. He's had a slight cough for a day or 2 but I haven't given him anything for it yet, only if it starts to sound real bad or lasts longer than it normally does only then will the meds come out. If he coughs at night and it affects his sleep (and mine) will I give him cough meds, honey has never been able to help me with that, LO just continues coughing. I have a few bottles of panado/calpol lying around waiting for their expiry date to come along. But I'm a great believer in allergex, must just check what's in it. Doesn't knock him out but sure sorts out more than a few things :)
