file Eight Medicines you should not give your children

How sad are people who google their symptoms and diagnose themselves. I mean I google everything but I'm no doctor - well strangely the last time I went to the doctor was in 2005 (not counting pregnancy - only because I missed him and wanted to ask a question) and I was a very sick little girl in school especially on days when a project was due or we had oral (mondeling) or something!

My aversion to meds comes from the fact that we were brought up using only homopathic meds, so I try to adoid adding additional chemicals to a child's system.

But as mentioned earlier, there are times when it is necessary, and when done with doc's supervision it's okay - my main problem is when you self-medicate.

I am a firm believer in waiting to see how serious it actually is, and if I am worried, then I take LO's to the doc (yip, he loves me).

I am sorry if I caused panic but the article didn't state anything negative about say panado nor against medicating. It just pointed out medications that should be avoided where possible.

There is always a concern with a forum like this that mom's panic but it is also a great platform for safety tips.

I always worry when a new mom posts a question about a sick baby and people reply with names of medications etc without knowing any more info about the baby like age, weight.

Charlene your lo needs her medications, but you are medicating with the support of a doctor which is perfect.

you know i think the prob with something like this is, a brand new 1st time mom that doesnt know anything gets freaked out when she reads something like this, i had a friend phone me now in a panic cause she gave the baby panado for 6 week injection... cause the parasetomol is bad and makes baby sleepy, so im like no, you only gave the right amount and she will be fine...
marijke: look at the panic it caused when you first brought up the subject of measles injection related to autism, everyone went in a panic state, and all of a sudden didnt know what to do, do they go or do they wait...
i have 3 kids and unfortunetly 2 have issues which medication is needed on prmanent basis, and the meds jolene is on is REALLY no laughing matter, it would freak a adult out, but i need to give it! without it life in this house is hell!!! ange is getting it for her immunity reasons!

Yip I was quite surprised the other day when I had Kayla at the Dr. (a new one as we've moved) and he actually weighted her to tell me how much meds to give her - it was 4.3ml! I never had that before - it was always 5ml or 10ml or whatever and he warned me not to give her more. I do give my kids meds, but only when necessary, not to get them to sleep.

I think the issue with the Facebook thing was that the pharmacist did not divulge what was in the mixture. I also think it differs from child to child. It's also about people "dozing" their kids.

Charlene, I obviously know your situation and you give what is best for your child.

I do, however, think that some people give meds to their children without the children really needing it. By this I mean it would be very easy for me to give Nienke the "tandemengsel" (from the chemist in Bloemfontein) to catch a few hours more sleep, because it makes her sleep. I feel if I were to do this, it would be just wrong.

BUT at the end of the day, each parent knows what is best for their own child.

Please note that I am not against meds and trust me Dylan has had his fair share.
