Your paed is right. I think he means that the body can deal with viruses but true infections may need antibiotics, About 90% of the time our kids get viruses which clear after 3 days and no meds are needed.

Dr's make educated guesses based upon years of study and basic tests. What you must remember is that some meds, even over the counter meds, have contra indications and certain people shouldn't take then or should have checks done before taking them like your bp etc.

Again it's fine to treat symptoms, but if you keep on getting symptoms it is best to find out the root cause. Eg you can vomiting with meds but you need to know why you are vomiting.

Hi guys

Ok I know I am a late comer but bare with me. I only took my daughter once to a pead and he actually told me that he would not give her antibiotics because they do more harm than good. The pead was an old man in his late 70's or so and he is quite good, he told me these things actually weaken the immune system and cause a dependency on them. the body can handle most of the attacks that happen on it but once you start antibiotics you deprive the body of the privilege to do the fighting and actually numb it to fighting, he told me an infection is good for the body and should not last for more than 3 days, so if baby has flu, give him lots of liquid and let him sleep the body will do the trick.

But on another hand,I am a master at self-medication, I always call my GP and ask what to do and he will tell me and I will go and buy the meds. Actually every year end, I take out my medical aid and go meds shopping for everything that is usually prescribed to us by the doctor. My doctor is a very good Muslim guy and we also have a doctor in the family, my cousin told me that most of the time they guess just like us what is wrong because there is no way of knowing for sure what is wrong with kids and they always give meds to deal with the symptoms and not the actual problem. So the symptoms I can also see and I can also treat.

shame brownie.

Antibiotics always destroy the good bacteria becasue they tell the difference between the good and bad so a probiotic is essential and I give it to dylan every day and I use it too regardless. The thought is that if the digestive system is dysfunctional then the body's immune system is lower because your body can't absorb nutrients so even a multivit would be a waste in a dysfuntional gut.

By the way, on wednesday night I was alone with LO and had dished up my dinner and as I was sitting on the couch LO came running and bounced on the couch next to me making me spill my food on his arm. And the stew was pipping hot - it was straight from the stove! And all I could hear in my mind was a voice screaming cold water and burnshield. We were in the tub and under a cold tap in seconds and was feeling crappy cos I think it was earlier on that very same day when I was asking for what to do in cases of burns and I was told about burnshield and had told myself that I'll buy it on the weekend :( Luckily he wasn't burned that bad and the cold water seemed to do the trick. I took him out the tub and he went into the lounge and I stayed behind to wipe the tears of my face cos I was feeling so bad that I'd just harmed my baby and was so worried only to walk back to the lounge and find LO doing a balancing act on the edge of the table like nothing had happened. Sometimes I think when our kids are hurt we feel the pain more than them
