@ girly, its gets easier when they get older because you dont have to think about them latching anymore, but I started by lying him on my tummy face down (have a look on google about biological nurturing to get the idea), and then I slowly started to roll over so that His head was supported by my arm. I then mastered the art of moving my arm out from underneath him without disturbing him. That then gave me the idea position to lie in so that he would be able to latch, so I was eventually able to lie him on the bed, get into that position and angle my breast towards his mouth. I found it more comfortable keeping an extra pillow with me at night and would wedge it behind my back so that I didnt flop away from him in my sleep stupour:)

Thanks Claudia, i thought it applied to both breast and bottle fed babies. Now i can feed him lying down again!
Girly, i didn't really notice any change in his sleeping pattern after i stopped burping him at night but every baby is different. As for changing nappies, Liam was born just before winter and i used to feel so bad to open out him clothes in the cold. Luckily its alot warmer now so your LO won't really feel the cold. I wish i knew how long before they stop fighting their sleep. With Liam, he's way too interested in what's going on around him so he doesn't want to miss out by going to sleep. That's leads to him getting over tired and over stimulated and then the crying will start. A nurse in hospital showed me how to feed lying down because she saw me standing and feeding Liam after he was born because it was too painful to sit with stitches. What i do is lie down with my head and on a pillow and then i rest Liam's head on my arm and that's how i feed him.

Claudia B please teach me what you learnt about this position so that I can do it in half the time :D I am way too impatient. I get it right, but very awkwardly and with me half lying, and then try manouvre myself all the way down somehow lands up that she stops sucking or something then we gotta try all over again.

I'm so glad you girls are interested! I really need the early morning company!

Thanks the advice re burping at night, been wondering about this. I think I shall give it a try ... only thing is then she might not eat as much and wake up more often? I get very lucky if she has a 4hr gap between her first and second feed. If I feed her less she'll wake up more? But maybe the 2nd feed I can skip the burping.
I am thinking of buying a co-sleeper to save me from having to lift her out the campcot (next to our bed)

The nappy changes - Kaylee is on water tablets (diaretics) for her heart, which increases her dirty nappies. So I have to change her every feed, and sometimes in between too. Thankfully only for another 3 days and then we should see an improvement. Boy am I looking forward to not having to change so many nappies, especially at night!

Miggie - the first couple weeks is tough with their sleepiness. Remember if you're still on pain meds, this gets into your milk supply too so they are more lathargic. Try different techniques of waking her up a bit more before you start a feed.
I used to change her nappie first to wake her up. They dont like the cold. Also can take off her grow so she's only in the vest. And lie her with her back on your lap and take your thumb and forefinger and run it down her body from her arms to below her abdomen this wakes them up too. So it means starting to get her ready a bit earlier for a feed. Once she's more awake then they will feed longer, then burp, then offer breast again.
To help the day night routine mix up, demand feed during the day, 3 hourly starting from 6am t 6pm, so she'll get 5 feeds in. Then demand feed her at night it should stretch these feeds a few hours apart. Remember newborn is considered first 2 weeks, and they should eat 2-3hourly initially, it gets longer as they pick up weight.

Vash that sounds hectic. I must say my biggest struggle besides for her cramps is getting her to sleep during the day. If they are niggly just nothing will work. How long is this meant to last?

Bronz thanks for the advice. I am so paranoid about suffocating her with my melons! But wouldnt mind just falling asleep. We especially bought a bigger bed last week so we had more space.

EP I have loads of books to read. The problem is that reading wakes my mind up and I'm worried I wont be able to fall asleep.
But I'll put a bed next to the bed and if no one is online I might as well make use of this time.

@ Vash, the eat infections when lying down only really applies to bottlefed babies because they dont have to really work hard to suck form a teat - it almost runs out, so they can be half asleep and drink, but not really swallow and then because th ear canal is horizontal in babies milk gets left behind. A breastfed baby has to work for milk, and if they "fall alseep sucking, its generally non nutritious, so you shouldnt get ear infection problems. Bottle fed babies need to be fed at a 45 deg angle:)

I sleep and feed often, but it took me 10 weeks to master the skill:)

Miggie you made me laugh! I can just imagine the sudden energy bunny getting everything right for the room at the early hours. Shows how much he cares :)

Nice that you got some sleep! I average 5 - 6 hrs a night which is apparently pretty good with a 5 week old; but thats from about 9pm till 9am that I'm counting. The last 2 nights I didnt get my 9pm nap though, so was really tough last night I was exhausted and K was up.
Kaylee usually feeds one 4 hr gap and then 2 or 3 hours later between midnight and 7am, but its feed, burp, change, feed again, rock to sleep so it takes up to an hour each time. If I dont give second feed after changing she wakes up a lot sooner.

Vash do you not burp Liam at night? I've read about a few ladies who feed lying down and then fall asleep and wake up later with sleeping baby next to them and just put them back in the cot.
But without burping that doesnt seem possible? If I dont burp K she throws a lot back up. Her digestive system is still developing - she's 5 weeks now. I'd LOVE to figure out feeding while lying down, but my E cup breast just drowns over her face!

How old are you LO's?
I find the evening feeds arent that bad cos she falls asleep quite easily after. During the day is worse cos after an awake stint she fights falling asleep, eventually I put her on the breast for 5 minutes and then she falls asleep. I think it might develop into a bad habit though.

The reason I'm up and checking emails / fbook / moomie early hours is cos I'm up for around an hour each feed so I need to kill time. But its rather boring cos no one is up past 12really so I talk to myself and check my phone every few mins to see if anyones replied!

I think it would be lovely to to have some company when feeding. Although I don't get up to feed at night anymore. But then again Jaqi is 7 months old already. I just wante dto add my 2c... I love reading, so I would just read my book, right thre in bed, while feeding. I also never burped her extensively with middle of the night feeds, and she was fine. No spit-up occured, but maybe we were just lucky...?

Will also watch out for this thread. I am normally up between 2 and 3. I saw this last night but he had just finished feeding.

I also used to suffocate Graeme, but I don't know how but I dont any more. But I still keep my hand there just incase. (haha, this sounds very bad.)

I must be honest I only burped G at night for the first few weeks. After that I stopped and waited to see if he would be fine with out it.
