Chanz...I thought long and hard about your question and there are lots of things we did and are doing now. But in all honesty, even while I was working, I wasn't earning much. So we've always lived simply.
Here's some things that help us to save money:
-Do a budget and stick to it (seems like a duh thing, but we suffer the months I don't do this)
-We have 1 car. We sold mine when I stopped working. It saves us a fortune every month...no service fees, no car insurance. If hubby works close to home (or close to the train/bus), think about selling one car and dropping him in the morning. Our circumstances allowed for this. I know in some houses it's not practical.
-We paid off the car so we don't have monthly payments on it. It was hard, but worth it. If you have a home loan...rather take out more on your bond and pay off your car. Repayments will be less (although you'll pay more in the long run)
-Make a weekly menu. Then your food budget is the same every month.
-Use cloth nappies. They are so easy to use, much better for baby and save money. We use the Mother Nature ones.
-Breastfeed. You can do it!!! Malawi has a 98% breastfeeding rate. IE something must be very wrong with you/baby to get it wrong. Formula costs the earth.
-We bought 80% of our nursery equipment on junkmail. Saved a bundle and most of it just needed a good clean then it looked new.
-We re-evaluated our insurances and changed some (like medical aid) Call your car insurance company EVERY year and tell them you're calling around for better quotes. They are desperate to keep you and will lower you amount. One year, I got them to lower ours by 25%.
-Use pre-paid everything (telephone, electricity, cellphone, internet) You control what is used then and don't pay subscription fees.
Ok, that's the end of my essay.

Hope this helps. Like I said though, everyones circumstances are different, so you just have to cut corners where you can. GL
