I just really had to share this with you. I just had the strangest phonecall ever. A lady phoned me who was browsing on our website looking at the inner booster pads of the cloth nappies we sell. She said she didn't use cloth nappies but rather disposables and that they were leaking so someone suggested she put a cloth booster pad inside. I asked her that seeing as though she was going to have to wash and clean the boosters everyday why she didn't consider perhaps just using the whole nappy instead, her answer was that she didnt' want to give out that much money or have extra work. Now I ask you, is spending anything from R500 to no more than R3000 once off not better than spending R300 to R600 a month on disposables? Just doesn't make sense to me. Well, just had to share. It was just a rediculous conversation.

Hello everyone,

Just wanted to stop in and say hello, seems everyone is doing ok and I also can't believe the halfway mark is here for some and fast approaching for others - whew! I must say, I am super scared - this being my first and all...

Daddy had a bit of a bridezilla moment on the weekend (but in a baby way) and I freaked out , told him to back off! I think we are both just so overwhelmed by everything (pregnancy hormones probably don't help - I'm officially a madwoman!!!) I have these fears him and his mum are going to gang up on me and tell me what to do - I am sure they won't - not after our little ummm "episode" this weekend ;-) think he knows I mean mommy business here. How have you all coped with mom in law? She is lovely but likes to tell everyone what to do... hmmm - first grandchild... i'm scared (very scared!!!)

Finally - we went for the 18 week scan yesterday - it was lovely! We had been for a 4d scan around 13 weeks and the lady had said she was 80% sure it was a boy - so I guess we both got our heads around it being a boy, I even bought boy stuff. Steve wanted a girl and so did I initially but we were still happy with our little boy - so long as he was healthy.

ANYWAY! Yesterday Dr Cameron told us it was 110% sure it was a GIRL - not a boy!! Talk about a shock - Steve was sooo excited and emotional and I was strangely confused as I now have to get used to a girl after getting used to a boy! I think the best thing to do going forward is to avoid early scans - way too much confusion. Guess we'll have to rethink names ;-)

Is anyone else who lives in JHB giving birth at Morningside Medi-Clinic?

Morning all

Firefly, I think a Doula could be very very helpful. My Cousin's wife gave birth via Cesearian in December and requested that she have her Doula present (She had planned natural but then they decided to do a Ceaser because the baby wouldn't engage) She had a traumatic first birth which ended in a very traumatic emergency CS and so this time having the Doula inbetween times when her DH couldn't be with her due to having to go with the baby etc really really helped. I think it's something you can consider, the support can only be of benefit to you. I actually have a good friend who is a Doula and I am considering asking her also to stand in with me.

I have gained 3.5Kg's so far so i also think I am not doing too badly. I gained a total of 9Kg with my 2nd pregnancy so i don't want to exceed that. With my Daughter I gained a WHOPPING 20Kg's!!!

Hi Ladies

Anni, I love the Phil&Teds and am leaning towards it or something similar - I like the thought of buying just one stroller and being able to add an extra seat as your family grows instead of searching for a double stroller when the time comes. Plus, it's pretty streamlined even when it is a double stroller. It looks like the iCandy does the same too.

I actually am thinking of hiring a doula but I'm not sure. I think having a doula may make me feel more comfortable if we go with the birthing center thats in the hospital - but on the other hand, I feel like I'm a pretty private person and I'm not sure if I want extra people in the birthing room... I'm going to have to think about it. I haven't actually watched OBEM - I was totally into all these shows like "I didn't know I was pregnant" and "Secretly pregnant" but hypnobabies encourages you to stay away from the images of birth that are displayed on tv because they're usually traumatic. So I stopped watching these things :)

3kg sounds good to me! I've picked up about 6kg altogether but since I lost about 4kg during the first trimester, my actual weight gain on my pre-pregnancy weight is about 2kg for now. Though I'm so hungry all the time that I can see how easy it would be to pile on the pounds..am trying to eat as much veg and fruit as possible but my freezer is also stocked with ice-cream (Haagen Daas is ridiculously cheap here!). I haven't heard of either of those diets but it may be something I look into when I'm trying to get back into shape!

2kmm, baby's growth sounds great! The 4D scan sounds really cool, ours was done in 2D and we, quite honestly, spent the majority of the time having absolutely no clue what the doctor was looking at!

Whew, sounds like you have a hectic day between job, business etc! I don't think Anni was insinuating that all working mums have it easier though, I got the impression that she was just commenting on her own experience.

Hi Ladies

So it's back to the Grindstone for me today. It's been a wonderful restful holiday and I am all charged for this year.

Congrats Michelle on the Birthday and that Rebecca is growing so nicely. Firefly & Ronel, congrats on theBoys. Firefly, I really hope you find the right birthing centre for you.

To the new ladies, hi and welcome.

can't beleive some of you are already past the halfway mark. These pregnancies are going really quickly.

AFM: went for my 18 week scan the other day and it was really nice and clear. The baby weighs 290gr and is a week ahead in growth. The Dr tried hard to get the hand open so he could look at the little digits in the little finger which would also help to indicate possible Downs Syndrome but the baby had a tight fist all along. This is the first pregnancy where my husband was so into the scan and kept talking about it afterwards. Turns out that because the doctor had a new 4D machine and everything was so much clearer than before the my DH could actually see what was going on and was very facinated. I also have an anterior Placenta like Anni and also don't feel much movement at all. I got quite worried just before my scan as I hadn't felt a single movement since about 14 weeks. I also had an Anterior Placenta with my Daughter but not with my son.

@ Anni I work a full day for a University, I also run a business fulltime between that and then after and before work I am also a full time Mum, my life is not a walk in the park, I definately do not sit back and relax in the boardroom and then get home, go lump on the couch and do nothing.

Hello ladies,

AdeleF, thanks I guess they say once you have the travel bug in you, you really cannot stop. I just love travel and experiencing new countries and cultures. It is so amazing to see how people from other parts of the world live. And I really don't want the thought of having little ones in tow stop us from travel.

Michellejvv, Happy Birthday. Wow R800 for a travel system is absolutely amazing. We made the mistake of buying the (very heavy @13.8kg and expensive) quinny buzz 3 when DD was born. Its a lovely looking pram but boy it is heavy especially post C-sec to remove out of the boot and not as practical. Now I am torn between getting a phil & teds tendem double or one of those icandy strollers. Am so lost. I don't know if I should just get a buggy board to fit on the quinny instead for DD and just make use of it for new bubs. I found a really nice one called the maxi cosi mila which fits with the maxi cosi car seat from 0-9 months so it double ups as a travel system - still have the car seat in storage. The beauty is that it only weighs 7.5kg and it can be used as a travel stroller. Also can be used with DD right now as well. Still looking for a good second hand bargain here or else I will just order direct from babycare.nl.

Firefly, I see you did your tours. Have you decided as yet? Have you thought of hiring a doula? I started watching One Born Every Minute US version. Big difference to OBEM UK. The more I watch it, the more I am opting for a midwife led birthing center. Its just so amazing how they push for interventions. And the women laying on their backs... I really don't know? Isn't gravity your friend when in labour and mainly... during the 2nd stage? I think you have to right up a birth plan and stick to it no matter what happens. Isn't the scan just amazing and so exciting knowing that there is a real little human bouncing around inside! Mine is booked for 14 Feb. I can still remember my scan with my DD. She was laying there all crossed legged and chilled out. Pity not as chilled out now!

I'm having quite an uneventful pregnancy. Haven't yet felt much behind the rolls of fat and considering that I have an anterior placenta so I'm sure it will happen in the next 2-3 weeks. With DD I only felt her movements at around 20 weeks (anterior as well). Just hoping I don't gain too much this time around. I have picked up about 3kg since I fell pregnant so I guess thats good? I'm really watching my intake with this pregnancy although I am hooked on Coke (must be from a can!). I was on the 30 day shred before I fell pregnant (probably the first few weeks as well!) so I still have the stamina. I want to start with the Karyn Sabine (sp) pregnancy workout but I just don't have any time between school drop offs and pick ups, grocery shopping, cooking and house work. Who said being a SAHM was easy? I take back my words. Its easier being in a boardroom then at home.

Anyways... thats my long story for now. Enjoy the weekend.
