Aaargh I've been working and haven't been able to go on moomies to reply but here I am now.
Aaah Girly, I feel your pain and I am so glad that K is feeding better again and like Charne said, I really admire your perseverence! You know, John fought me at the breast from the day he was born but I persevered because like you I was adamanant he would only have breastmilk. When he was 6 weeks old I was at my wits end, I mean even though people told me that breastfeeding was not the easiest thing in the world like its made out to be, I couldn't believe that John and I were still struggling so much with it. I felt like such a failure - first I had to have a caesar instead of natural, then I was faced with the possiblility of putting him on formula much earlier than I wanted to.
My paed told me there's nothing wrong with a complementary bottle of formula a day, so that's what we did from 6 weeks and John would get it at dinner time. I also started expressing at this time. NO WAYS can I express 180ml at a time - Kerry is amazing - my step-mom-in-law (mouthful

) could do that but not me. I pump over the course of a whole day and might have enough for a freezer storage bag or one feed the next day. In fact my left boob, the most I have ever got out of it is 30ml - wierd hey? My right boob gives me between 70ml and 100ml. So in order to build up some stock for the freezer I started giving John another formula bottle in the mornings too. My life suddenly got alot easier over this time and I felt much better.
Then he decided to up the tempo of fighting me on the boob, maybe because he was getting used to the bottle? But it was heart wrenching and I cried and felt like a failure all over again. So that's when we changed to4 feeds a day, and 3 bottles a day (mostly 2 bottles of breastmilk and 1 bottle formula at night) and then I breastfeed him the early morning feed. And so far so good (its been about 3/ 4 weeks).
So all my pre-pregnancy expectations of breastfeeding him exclusively for 6 months flew out the window. Like I was telling Sonay from the Sept moms group, these babies of ours have their own agendas and we follow suit. Its been a humbling lesson for me but the most important thing I keep reminding myself, is a calm and happy baby. That's why I opted for the caesar in the end and thats why I succumbed to using formula. And John is a MUCH happier baby when he doesn't have to fight for his food
Anyways, much love from JOzi side and know that we all support you. Sometimes these men of ours don't understand the immensity of what we are feeling and going through but we need to give them the benefit of the doubt. My DH and I are going through ups and downs too, I think the first year of a baby's life is very hard on the parents' relationship, I mean things are so different and all our attention is now on our babies and not on our men anymore, and even the most mature of men must feel a little abandoned and left out.
Oh and even though breastfeeding has never been as pleasant for me as its supposed to be, John and I have still bonded incredibly and have lots of special 'together' time
