Cathm, see you are a bit confused - If you are paying R900, then its private, regardless where you get it. Dischem generally gives private.

Some pharmacy's clinic sisters do both, you can choose. If you do private, you pay the +- R900, + sometimes a clinic/admin fee (that would likely be the R95?).
If you do goverment, the vacs are 100% free, you just pay the clinic fee. Just check, some clinics ask R40, some I've heard charges R350!!

If you do goverment at a 'private' clinic, you have the option of doing some additional vacs that goverment doesnt cover, eg MMR - then you just pay for those few.

For those in Joburg wanting to go goverment, I can recommend the Weltevreden Pharmacy (crn Beyers Naude and Acacia Rd, Blackheath) Very nice clinic sister, and clinic fees are R40

also from what i just read on that thread is that the state vacs use polio drops whereas the private are included in the injection.

thanks tazzy! ja even the Dischem lady said 8 weeks was fine I just happened to have done the rotavirus already at 6 wks. I might just do it all at the paed just for convenience sake sigh and claim from medical aid.

from what Ive googled it looks as though the Infanrix is private. the difference being (from 2008 when my lg was born) is that it seems like the hepB is now included into the same vacc.
so hence - the pentaxim is for Diphtheria, tetnus, pertusis, influenza b and polio
and the new infanrix is all of the above plus HepB

and then the Synflorix is the old "prevenar" which is for Pneumoccocal

so glad the privates only start at 8 weeks cos my clinic sister is away on hoilday til next week

tazzy I also heard that re the private are better oh dear I wonder which is private - your one or my one? Anyone can help? Will try google it

OK so what I found out was that it was R95 extra to do it at the paediatricians rooms!? Both charge the same for those 2 - R900 ish and Dischem also helps you claim so I think even though it's only R95 diff I'll go to dischem down the road the sister there sounded very nice and I like the idea of them submitting to medical aid first on my behalf
