Mia_HannahsMommy - can I ask, if you need to cuddle your child to sleep at night, and maybe this would apply to other moms who rock thier children to sleep for an hour or 30 minutes or what ever...

At what point does the evening become yours - without your children?
Are you able to go on a date with your partner and leave your children with someone else, safe in the knowledge that your child is in bed andf fast asleep, and unless sick, will remain in bed and asleep until the morning - so there is no need to rush home?
Are you able to put your kids to bed, and go out and meet your friends for dinner at 19h30?
Are you able to take your children to a friend who does not have kids, bath and feed them and put them down to sleep at a friends house while you rejoin the adult conversation?

Just wanted to add you should only sleep train if you are 100% sure baby is not ill.

I understand medicating in extreme situations. I have a friend whose 18 month old still suffers with Colic and she gets on average 3 hours of sleep a night. She has not medicated up till now but is looking into it as she is not coping anymore and it is effecting her relationship with her hubby. Honestly I proberly would have medicated her long ago. I am not good with no sleep and my children suffer for it.

I don't mean medicate at every opportunity but medication is there for a reason and should be used if necessary.

Sleep training does not leave your baby crying for hours but I can understand how some Moms see that as cruel.

EACH TO THEIR OWN.

Mommy to Ryan almost 3years old and Ben almost 5 months old

My LG started sleeping in her own room at 4 months. Hubby nearly had a fit - wanted her to sleep with us for ever (mad man....)

I told him, the sooner we do it, the quicker she learns. Now she sleep soundly in her own little space and we are free to do whatever we want.

She gets up between 04h00 & 05h00 and then get to be in bed with Daddy & Mommy till we get up.

Also, not morning nukky for Hubby which suits me as I am not a morning person

I would not medicate my girl to sleep. But I would medicate her if I suspect she is in pain, or to calm her down. If she's calm I don't mind her being awake all night.

I actually did it on Saturday night, she was screaming in a way that's way out of character and as hubby and I have colds I concluded she is feeling bad as well so I gave her panado and she calmed down. She fed well after that (instead of screaming and not wanting to latch). I gave her such a small dose it didn't even put her to sleep.

But I think what you're on about is purely about giving medicine to make a child sleep night after night instead of teaching them good sleeping habits...in that case I'm with you.

Jems, it's you and me and attachment parenting again :) My girls are my girls, I work in the day if they ned me at night, why on earth would I pretend not to be there for them? god blessed me with these two little precious girls and I'm their mommy, if they cry then I cuddle.

they're small for such a short time and I love holding them until they fall asleep. Mia sleeps sometimes in my bed, sometimes in hers, and all 4 of us in our house sleeps better if she's with me right next to me in bed. Hannah's still in her cot next to our bed.

Everyone tells me the same thing, Mia is such a happy, content, independant and well balanced little girl. she is NOT spoilt, she knows she is not alone and that mommy is there and she can count on me if she needs me!!!

as for sleeping through. Hannah wakes twice a night, but mostly only once she feeds, burps and promptly falls asleep again. She doesn't need to be rocked to sleep like Mia did. And for Mia, she sleeps rights through - doesn't even wake if Hannah cries!

I take my hat off to moms and babies who suffer from colic!!!

Drug them to get them to sleep - no way, that's why I moved Mia from her previous school, they were dosing the kids on Panado to get them to sleep.

If the baby is screaming to no end for hours and there's no visible reason for it, come on, maybe she's got a tummy cramp or something, so give her something for her pain - not for your sleep!!! Obviously not every night, otherwise it calls for a visit to the paed to get to the bottom of the problem.

of coz if we give our kids the option they will rather sleep in our bed, i prefer to have chloe in bed with me when she is sick.
its what i prefer, i like to be able to watch her etc

i mean if she had the choice she would always sleep with me, i dont mind if she falls alseep in my bed, arms or whatever but she knows that she goes to her own bed at the end of the day and from 5am she is allowed to come into our bed and cuddle or whatever.
