I think we should judge mothers medicating their children so they go to sleep. It is plain wrong!

and the natrual c section debate has just started all over again.

Oh my exciting times.

Okay so an amzing lady said that I can't be perfect all the time and it is okay to judge at times as I am human.

I do judge when:

Parents abuse medicine to help themselves and lets face it kids really don't mind watching tv all night long. They don't have to go to work.

Kids are not secured in a car seat.

Parents smoke near their kids.

Kids are on Ritalin (sp) which I don't have an issue with but then drink coke and eat sweets all day.

Mom of Dylan and Partner to Joerg. We live in the Beautiful Pringle Bay which is along the Whale coast, Cape.

ashbabe - I agree there are few things nicer than snuggling with your child, but I think you have sort of stumbled on the truth ... we do it because it makes us feel good, that is why we do it.

At some point in our plan to snuggle - we also realise that it is "trapping" us into something that needs to be maintained every night, as children are creatures of routine.

If I bathed my kids and popped them in bed with me and we all had a sing along, and went to sleep, there is no way I can decide next Wednesday that I wanted to change the routine.

Surely all we are doing is teaching our child a routine that is not sustainable in the long term?

Ok firstly, there's a difference between medicating a baby and using homeopathic medicine. Does homeopathic meds count under your the word 'medicating'.

I'm one of those sleep deprived moms...and it's come to that point that I want to SCREAM and not stop SCREAMING when Mignione woke up HOURLY or twice every hour EVERY night. No sane person can live like that. Getting about 3-4hours sleep a night for a year is ridiculous. So I decided to start using homeopathic meds (Sister Lilian). I can't say wether it's working or not but I'm using it for in case it might work.

No mom expect to sleep late until 10 in the mornings. You know that when you get pregnant that sleeping will happen no more. BUT there's a difference between not getting any sleep at night and complaining because you can't sleep in over weekends.

To me, letting a baby cry (controlled or not) is cruel. Even letting your baby cry for 10minutes is cruel in my eyes!! You think medicating a baby is cruel. Everyone is allowed to their opinion. When people start using meds that literally bum out the baby..yes..then I also think that's not right. But giving a baby that's been crying for 5hours inconsolably, Panado or Nurofen thinking that they might have pain? There's nothing wrong with that in my opinion!

May I just say - AMEN! I use hoemeopathic remedies, especially Rescue tablets when ever the going gets tough. I admit, I don't give coughing meds or fever meds or stuff to let a baby or child calm down, but I will give Rescue in extreme cases of sadness or teething or whatever. I surely DON'T expect to sleep until 10 on ANY day never mind a SATURDAY, cause I work on Saturdays. SUndays we go to church so no sleeping until 10 then too. Some weekdays my dh would leave for work later and give me a sleep in but even then I get up no later than 9 I just get too irritated to lay there.

But yeah I get the general point, you should KNOW a baby will keep you up anytime if not all the time whenever they are hungry or in need of attention for some or other reason. I have never sleep trained any of kids, guess I am just one of teh lucky few who never had severe trouble with sleeping. My kids are down by 20h30 at the latest and up at 7h00. Even Jaqi sleeps druing that time. BUT while she was sick with that ear infection she woke 2 or 3 times a night, in pain and in need of comfort. So "sleep training" would have done squat in that case.

Freedom of choice. No matter how you decide to deal with baby sleeping routine or lack there of is no one elses business (unless your completely unstable as a mother). If you want to medicate your child who can judge you? If you prefer not then great there are other methods that work for you.

Every person is different and there need for sleep might bring about totally different behaviours to there usual loving mother ways and go all psyco on the poor baby...so then I would never say no dont medicate your child to a mother with this "weakness".

No one is the perfect parent but we are "perfect" for the child we were given.
