file I just need to vent

I must add that I didn't have a problem with the odd natural remedy for a night and I did make it very clear that if you intend to sleep train you should have your baby seen by a paed to rule out things like ear infections.

What did worry me is that some of the moms do it every night for ages and I asked when do you stop? How do you know when they don't need it and yes even homeopathy is medicating. Your child isn't going to sleep in a natural state. If I am wrong correct me please.

I had such bad post traumatic stress that I didn't sleep even when he did. I couldn't close my eyes as I would have flashbacks, but that was not Dylan's fault. He was just a baby who had to wake for feeds ever 2-3 hours. I was not a nice person, but instead of treating my son I had to treat me.

Jems Dylan has slept in our bed for a week as he has been sick, but last night I had to do some sleep training. He cried with me there for 5 minutes and then fell asleep and he slept through for the first time in ages.

Mom of Dylan and Partner to Joerg. We live in the Beautiful Pringle Bay which is along the Whale coast, Cape.

Part of being a parent is to be able to train your child - the same reason you smack thier hand if it goes too close to the fire, or let them fall off the small wall, so they grasp the concept of falling - so maybe they think a bit before climbing on the 8 foot wall.

Sleep training - for me - is one of those things. We are not alone in the world and have to function in a community.

Your initial community is your house - every member's actions affect the other member.

Of course we need to make allowances for a teeny-weeny baby or a sick child, but house/community rules also need to apply - sleep time, is well sleep time, not see-how-many-times-I-can-get-mom-up-during-the-night time.

If we are teaching our children that the rules of going-to-sleep-time can be wavered with a loud enough scream or tantrum, then aren't we teaching our child, well rules do not actually apply - because he who screams the loudest will eventually be picked up.

And to totally agree with Julz - if you are medicating your child to sleep, then you need to be speaking to someone.

gloeiwurmpie - I am trying to hide the luminous pink bottle saying "for improved sexual desire" so my maid does not see it - or my kids - because I feel a tad embarrassed - why is it bright frikn PINK!!!

Julz- I know what you mean but I think when you are in the deepest throws of sleep deprivation, you become desperate and just will do anything to get some form of sleep.

We are programmed to be awake during the day and sleep at night and when your little bundle of joy arrives and throws you into hours of being awake until the wee hours of the morning the lack of sleep just takes away any form of rationality we have (had).

I must be honest that when I had my first child he was so good and I hardly suffered from lack of sleep then my second monster arrived and suffered from colic and he cried the night away for months. After experiencing the crying and lack of sleep then, I sometimes now am so greatful to be up with an awake baby as long as he does not cry for hours.

What I am trying to say is that as humans we cannot function properly without sleep and some people will choose to medicate and others will choose to sleep train. But we will all moan and groan (and even cry) about it regardless of how we knew (and were warned) we would not sleep once baby arrived.

I slept trained my 6 month old already. Like you say, I did not leave him crying for hours. He was reassured and eventually he fell asleep on his own. I am quite a strong believer in sleep training but I know that some Mom's have told me that sleep training did not work and they resorted to medicating (or re-setting their babies internal body clocks to sleep through the night). Whether they did not do it right I would not know- Is there a right or wrong way to sleep train.

I thinking by complaining we get re-assurrance from other Mom's in a similar situation and this makes you feel a little bit better about things.

All I know and have learnt is there is no magic cure. It is all trial and error especially when it comes to babies that don't sleep well.

Yes, as far as I am concerned, motherhood is all about what is best for baby.

Having said that, my LG started sleeping through from 3 months on her own. We do try to sleeptrain her to fall asleep on her own, but to date no luck - still patting her bum for about 10 minutes till she falls asleep.

I am really not even going to comment on what is right and what is wrong - I souldn't know.

I personally am not good with babies and crying and all that, but I try. And if I feel I'm not coping, I phone Hubby or my mother to please come help me.

I would medicate if it meant I had a happier, healthy baby, but not for my own sanity. I would rather go mad than put myself before my child.

One day my kids will be able to say: I have a unstable mother, but we always came first in her live
