Charlotte, you lucky fish!
And yay Lorelai for eating scrambled eggs. I still can't get B to eat scrambled eggs, she likes a hard boiled egg more.

I have heard about the egg and measles injection thing before and also the marie biscuit one Sarah said. B still hasn't had her measles injection, so I can't comment on a reaction, but I know one of the ladies in our group has a child with an allergy for eggs and they gave the measles injection at the hospital in case of a severe reaction.

Claudia, love your thread in the ladies corner.... so true!

question: did any of you know that you have to test and see if your child is allergic to egg before they go for the 9month measel injection. apparently if they are allergic they cant get it because something in it will give them the same reaction.

today i took 20 pots of purity back to the store and i got rewarded. did not have the slip anymore and i bought 2 weeks ago when they were on sale for R5 and got back just over R6 a pot. Score!

I've always told mums to try their little one with a Marie biscuit or 2 a week or so before the measles vaccine because Marie has egg in it, if no reaction then I suggest trying scrambled or poached egg. The preservative or something in the measles vaccine gives the reaction so most moms should be told to try egg before the vaccine (the clinic sister used to make a note on our appointment card)

so as you can see, i cant sleep! friday when i got home, we had egg on toast for supper. i made Lorelai scrambled egg, put it on her walking rings tray, rope in my nerves, recapped on how to save my child from choking and gave it a shot...

she loved it and she finished it. was so proud. no allergic reaction!

@ Bronz there was a thread a coupe of weeks ago about starting solids at three months where I posted the latest WHO Guidelines. In it it says that if a child is going to develop and allergy they will do so regardless of when that food is introduced (otherwise we shoudl all be feeding eggs, nuts and seafood as early as possible)

Also I have heard this before, but my question s this - Allergies are becoming more and more prevalent and before 1st world war babies in europe were only started on solids at about 9 months, so why are there more allergies now???
People have loads of theories on how to avoid allergies, my theory is we should all go live on a farm and go back to living off the earth without modern convieniences:)

A true allergic response is life threatening and can cause death. It is cause by an immunological response to a toxin. This immune response gets worse with increasing exposure, so the first bee sting will hurt, the next cause swelling and the next bronchospasm ie death:) These are usually hereditory (and people with known allergies are told to wait until exposing their children to that allergen, so the early exposure thing is bizaar to me)

Most people actually have food intolerances. Babies dont have lactase (or much of it) which is why we dont give real milk and I think the large proportion of people who have intolerances do so because of the quantities of food with hidden irritants that are eaten (for example wheat is found in baked beans, baking powder, canned fish, crumbed meat, jams, ice cream, etc.. No wonder our bodies cant tolerate it anymore (what happened to good old normal food))

Bronz for your first question, if you mean giving carrot for teething purposes like for itchy gums then sure, perhaps not cucumber if he has a tooth already or if it's a soft cucumber and always under strict supervision (but then I knew you would anyway ;) )

Yoghurt was the only thing B ever ate off a spoon (as in it being fed to her)

She never had a reaction to anything except tomatoes but she had tomato with a few other things so we had to give it again to make sure that was the thing (only a little redness on her chin)
But also remember that we have no allergies in our combined families that we know of. If we did I would avoid said 'thing'

My pead is saying that this is the latest research to start earlier to prevent allergies. I dont feel that is right. If the baby is not ready to push the food to the back of their mouths their bodies can't be ready. I am going to try following Graeme's cues. Oh he also gave me this fake I have no idea what BLW is. Surely he should know what options parents have, hence I get the feeling he knew exactly what I was talking about, as he started trying to pawn off the idea of me using a mesh bag with fruit in. No offense to any one you likes those but it really does not appeal to me, would rather wipe food off the floor than clean gob and mush out of a bag.

I would like to do a bit of spoon feeding such as with yogurt and banana, just so that if we are out he wont make a huge mess. But I get the feeling if I am going to go the blw route he wont let me spoon feed him. Already knows what he wants.

Should you still do the one food a week and watch for allergies? Marijke I know you didn't did Bianca not have any reactions to so many at once?

@ Bronz, apparently the WHO guidlines (which also says only start food at 6 months - so I dont get SA paediatricians who are still back in the 1990's) state that loss of toungue thrust is important before starting solids:)

Gosh mommies get really funny about their opinions - but I just want to point out that the very same people that advocate purities, will give teething biscuits and the like (are those not "solids" too???)(I'm not saying purity is wrong, I'm just pointing out that most people do a mix without even realising it)

Sorry, I thought BLW was crazy as well, but then I looked into it and decided that anything that is advocated by heath visitors, dieticians, UNICEF cant be all bad, and again you dont see apes mushing up food for their babies when weaning from milk...
(But then I belong to the natural birth, breastfeeding, organic food camp, so I must be a bit of a hippy:)
