Marijke - indeed ye of little faith :) The benefits of this forum of course is that it is a literal mountain of information from whence we take and use according to the situation we find ourselves in at a specific point in time.

My situation changed and I had to find something that worked for me again. It happened to be introducing chunks of meat (ok I will admit that my husband had a lot to do with this) and then seeing that it was actually ok and subsequently starting to introduce other bit food. Because he is now getting about 50% of his nutrients from food and has difficulty with his aim I still feed him (or rather help him feed himself) from a spoon. The only thing he will let me feed him without complaining are his daily smoothies - maybe it's because he wants to ensure that Mom doesn't eat most of it :)

After the unfortunate incident on Friday I entertained the thought of shutting this thread down.

I think it's something 'new' to some people (we all know that new = scary) but there is nothing new about it, it just recently got a name. Spoonfeeding has only been around for 60 odd years.

Charlotte, so glad that we have another blw baby in Lorelai! Don't be surprised if at some point in the near future she rejects the spoon. Once they have a taste of freedom they usually start preferring it that way.

Juno, in all honesty I thought after the last time we spoke that you would never try it (excuse me of little faith!) but I am very proud of you, keep up the good work! The meat thing is very normal, my sisters 3 year old still does that, but it does sometimes depend on the type of meat. But do present practice for that pincher grasp at every meal time, one day they can't do it and the very next they can and it's a developmental thing at 9 months but keep trying!

Claudia, I can't wait for James to start!

2kidmamma, thanks so much. I only started this thread because I found no support out there except for one friend and it was terrifying going at it alone.

Makes me seriously sad also. I amnot BLW Mommy because I had never heard of it until I joined this thread and now it's basically too late really but let me tell you, If I had known of it I would have surely given it a good consideration and possibly even tried it out. I always hated the thought of sticking a spoon full of food into my babies mouth not sure if it's really what they wanted or not. I think Marijke, you are doing a wonderful job and exposing a fantastic idea to people who would not have known about it otherwise.

We did the Marie Buscuit trick with both our kids. With our Daughter unknowingly as she was eating Budoir & Maries from 6 months. Then the clinic Sister asked us before the injection have if we had given these bikkies and if there was no reaction then they didn't have an egg allergy.

@ Juno In the BLW book, Jill Rapley says that babies take a while to transition from food is fun to play with to food fills me up (usually 8/9months) so he might be enjoying the chewy texture of the meat, and even by just chewing on it he is swallowing some of the nutrients, so dont stress about it:)

James started sitting today and he has been gumming all his toys recently. Hes still young and hesnt been paying any attention to me eating (although he loves reaching out to my drinks which has frequently resulted in me being wet), so hes not quite ready, but I thought Id see what he did today and gave him a sliver of a pear. Obviously not as colourful and interesting as his toys, because although he picked it up, he just threw it on the floor (lucky dogs). 2 minutes later I put his giraffe rattle in front of him, he picked that up and it went straight into his mouth:)

My LB is doing a kind of combination feeding but is increasingly wanting to feed himself. He's starting to perform if I don't give him the spoon - not that he is even close at being able to do it completely by himself.

Anyway the issue I have is that he treats pieces of meat like chewing gum. I started on small pieces a couple of weeks ago as he point blank refuses to eat pureed protein and I was also tired of giving him almonds, dates and cheese all the time. Anyway he just chews and chews the meat and doesn't swallow nor does he spit it out. What's up?

It's also a difficult one with this desire to feed himself as he still has not got the pincer grip down to a fine art and I often have to help him out. His sitting is also not 100% so I have to watch him like a hawk. He seems to be really good at chewing (no teeth) though and doesn't do a lot of gagging (long may that last). I used to be terrified about the chocking but for some reason that fear although always at the back of mind is now a rational one.

Just thought I'd share.
