Astubchen, how did the night go? Is Lwandle ok?
Vendah & Nozn, there are 2 "schedules" for immunizations. One is the private schedule and the other is the public/government schedule.
Private immunization means you go to your hospital's mom & baby clinic to get the baby injected. Most pharmacies also offer this service, but in both cases the stock is not supplied by the government so you have to pay a steep amount for each vaccination (R1000 each, and some are as much as R1800). You can claim this amount back from your medical aid, if you have medical savings. Otherwise you'll pay cash for the whole amount.
In the old days our moms took us to the local clinic for our baby injections, this was sponsored by the government and was free. This is where our moms saw the clinic sister and asked for advice. In modern days these government immunizations are still available, except that none of us wants to go and sit at our local government clinic because it's so crowded and can take a whole day!
Luckily these days a few pharmacies get government stock as well. This is usually your stand-alone pharmacy, not a big chain like Dischem or Clicks. You get to see a clinic sister, just like the big pharmacies, but you have the choice to decide between the private and government schedules. The first injection on the private schedule is around R1300, but should be around R150 on the government schedule. I'll know for certain when I take my baby next week and will send you an update on the cost then.
The vaccines on both schedules are administered at the same time, and treat the same thing (meaning, if it's at 6 weeks on private, it will also be at 6 weeks on government). The name of the vaccine is different for private and government, but both will treat chicken pox (for instance) and is equally effective.
In my few, we all pay tax, so why should we not make use of benefits supplied by the government? The trick is just to find out where your closest pharmacy is that stocks government supply, maybe put a new post on the general forum and ask if anyone knows?
Last note: the first injection is between 6 - 8 weeks, don't rush to do it at 6 weeks unless your doctor told you to. Wait until closer to 8 weeks if you can.
