Hey ladies:) I cant believ how busy James has been keeping me lately, it doesnt help though that my hubby has been travelling so much for work lately, so I have no help at home:( As a result I spend all of James sleep time running around doing all other bits and bobs, so dont have much time to spend on the computer!
Ladies who are worried about the fact that they express too little - I found a link on the leleche league website that said that studies have shown that babies eat more or less the same volume of breastmilk for the first 6 months, and rather than the volume of milk increasing as the baby ages (like you would have to do with formula) its the qality of the milk that changes, so at 6 months your milk is much higher in calories than at 1 month. This volume is normally around 750mls, so to work out how muh your baby gets in a feed devide 750 by the number of feeds. Basically their growth spurts and incessant sucking simulate fattier milk production rather than more milk, which is why when your milk supply is established, you no longer feel engorged. In the same article they said that the average amount expressed through pumping is between 30 and 60 mls (per breast) and if you are getting a lot more you may actually have more milk than required (ie an oversupply), that made me feel sooo much better because I only get about 60mls when I express:)
What I have done is expressed 8 bottles of 150mls and frozen them with dates. This is going to become my formula stockpile, so that if I ever have to go somewhere suddenly, I have a supply. As I use a bottle I replenish, so hopefully that will work:) I have just seen that all my firends who are feeding formula seem to be having tummy issues with their babies:)
Also I wanted to reiterate what Meags said about development. Dont stress about milestones, babies will do things when they are ready. Life has become so competitive that parents stress about things - a rule of thumb is if your child is not sittin by 9 months then go see someone (Id advise an OT or physio rather than a paediatrician as a first line for developmental questions! - If anything serious is possible they will send you to the paed, but I find our developmental assessments are far superior! On that note though James rolled over from his tumm to his back last weekend. I had a heart attack, luckily he was on his babygym mat on the floor, but I turned my back for one second to answer the door and when I turned back he was on his back looking very surprised on the wooden floor! He now does it all the time, so so much for tummy time!
Meeting with his swimming teacher this week, so feeling a bit nervous!
