Hayley hugs to you and yes colic is awful. most importantly you followed the advice of the paed and then medicated. This I have no problem with at all.

Hi ladies

I think this is a topic where everyone has different opinions and that is fine. I am happy to accept everyones own opinions but that is all they are just opinions and generally with being a Mom it usually means going on your instincts which are generally right. If you want to be a good Mom you can get lost in a world of different opinions so best to make up your own mind and do what is right for you, your child and your family. No-one but you knows what your situation is.

My youngest son had Colic and cried non stop for the first 18 weeks of life. It was terrible. No-one can prepare you for a baby that cries non-stop. When you decide to have a baby you are putting yourself in line to having very little sleep-yes but endless crying which makes you as a Mother feel so awful and inadequate as a parent is not something you even think about when you decide to have a baby.

My Paed and Anne Richardson (Author of Baby Sense) advised that I medicate. A tired strung out Mommy can't and won't be a good Mommy was more or less what both of them told me. I did not medicate for the first 8 weeks as I was too scared to but in the end myself and my partner agreed that we needed to. I can tell you I did not medicate because I needed him to sleep, I medicated because he was in pain and the meds soothed his pain and helped with the endless crying.

At the end of the day we can say that medicating is for the parents benefit and does not help the baby but my son was much happier after we eased his pain with the Colic remedy. It also depends what kind of Colic your child sufferes from. As Anne Richardson explained Colic is not always stomach cramps but is a term used to describe a baby that cries endlessly. My son was diagnosed with Reflux at 8 weeks and the Paed told me that it was proberly the reason for his endless crying (Colic).

Personally I medicated myself and my baby and things were much better from that point forward. But medicating done for the right reasons at the right does in my mind is fine. This is just my opinion and I know some Mommies out there don't agree but I truelly don't judge them or anyone for making their own decisions about what is right for their baby and child.

Honestly we are all Moms (on this forum) that care and love our babies and children endlessly and using medication for Colic or for anything else (if needed) is okay and a normal thing to do. No-one should be made to feel guity about medicating (within reason), not breastfeeding, not giving birth naturally and not spoon feeding their baby etc...

We have all signed up with this site so that we can moan, groan laugh and cry (electronically) about all problems that we have with our babies/children and ourselves as women and Mothers. Mothers that moan about not getting enough sleep because baby does not sleep is part of the Moomie package. If you have a lack of sleep it is evitable that you will moan about it.

ok the first 2 months of babies life was total cahoas in outr houseand i didnt open up to motherhood and i kind of hated it.... until me and hubby started supported each other. That means sleep diprived mothers please go sleep in the spare room or on couch and let the father/gra/friend just look after baby for one night tomorrow you will feel better,no drugs needed.

and then babies thrive on routine, read it in more than oe book so keep to it, my baby is almost 5months and has good night and bad nights.... but we have the same routine every night and it works for us.

I dont likeleaving a baby cry as i feel my baby is trying to tell me someting is wrong and the one person who should listen ignores him .

and then medication.... how would you as a grown woman feel if somebody druged you every night???

Hi Everyone

Just my two cents worth .... I never did any kind of sleep training with my kids, just because i knew myself and a crying baby just used to freak me out until i started getting used to the "signs"...meaning why is the baby crying etc? Once i knew this, i knew what was necessary i.e. is baby uncomfortable, is baby over stimulated etc. I read the baby sense book which advised that an overstimulated baby is a very difficult baby to console. I knew that i had to put in place a "plan", so that reading my baby became easy and that before they reached the stage of overstimulation, it was time for a doo doo. I never medicate unnecessary especially just to get a good nights rest. Like alot of you have said, sleep deprivation is part of the package. You just learn to cope with it. My first born was a terrible sleeper, but my second child isn't..Thank God! There are days though when she doesn't sleep well, but hey it's the same like that for us right?

What i do know is that i would never be able to sleep train. To this day i hold and cuddle my 11 month old in a quiet dim room. It's a time i enjoy with her as she drinks her bottle and doses into a peaceful slumber. I hold her for as long as i want and then put her down for the night. I did it with my son as well and i still go and lay with him a wee bit before he falls asleep and he is 4.5 years :)

For those who do sleep train, i don't judge. You do what works for you. As for those who medicate ....i rather not comment!

Marijke it was long ago teething mixture.

I completely agree with you.

I took Dylan for his 6 weeks check up with the paed. Dylan had colic and I had ptsd. I didn't ask a single question. I just sat there.

I did mention the colic though and he said there is no cure for crying. He said I can give you meds but all it will do is drug your child and make you feel better. Your child is not sick. He asked if I could get through another 6 weeks as I had done so well already and I said yes.

It was hell but I stunbled through it. Then dylan was teething and the same doc asked what I was giving him and I said the gel and he said calpol is perfect. If you think your child is in pain then by all means.

I am just tired of mom's trying to rush the whole sleep issue. Either by drugging or by feeding too early etc. I found that the day I made peace with the lack of sleep is the day we both calmed down completely.

And yes treat the mommy rather.

haha Aspoestertjie, who would have known that this topic would be educational!

I think the thing for me was that, on that particular evening, everyone was enjoying themselves and sitting around the fire and I was stuck, I got upset and needed time to breath but no one wanted to help. My MIL is shit scared of a crying baby and my sister has her own kids to deal with. Hubby helped out but when I was outside and he was stuggling with her in the room I felt so guilty for him missing out on the chatter. I was just really torn that evening. But I think it's the harsh lesson that you are a mother now. Your child comes first and it was a hard lesson to learn when I was so set in my ways before having B.

I have learned a lot from this topic (I just need to vent - hahaha who would have thought)

Thankx Julz and everyone.

I am a first timer, and I really struggle to cope with a crying baby. Luckily, she does sleep well and I never had to use anything, but I also learned to "UP MY GAME" as Marijke said and should stop being a "OH my baby is crying and I can't take it" kind of Mommy.

Time to put on my BIG GIRL panties and be a "real" mommy to my child!
